Corruption and greed knows no boundary
The NYPD internal affairs department released a statement detailing the investigation of over 100 officers for crimes ranging from taking bribes and laundering drug money to partaking in armed robberies and drug dealing. The issue of crime amongst officers has been of growing relevance as the force has gotten younger and starting salaries have been lowered. Starting pay for a rookie police officer just recently was raised from $25,000 to $40,000 per year. As early as one year ago a rookie police officer made just over $12 an hour. One police source noted these low salaries as reason for supplementing their pay with ill gotten gains. The source goes on to say “You pay a low salary, and people come from neighborhoods where they grew up with people who didn’t make the move” in the right direction”. Two pilots, two crashes, two very different public opinions
The tragedy of flight 3407, which crashed into a suburban Buffalo home on Thursday, is being blamed on ice… and on the pilot. Long gone are the days where kids could look up to athletes as role models and expect that they act accordingly. The Mickey Mantle’s and Pat Tillman’s, of the sports world have been replaced by the O.J Simpson’s, Plaxico Burress’s and Jose Canseco’s. Unfortunately many of today’s most notable players are drug abusers, and failures to live up to expectations, who could care less about public perception as long as their paycheck is not affected. Of course once they are caught they act incredulous and force out some alligator tears while proclaiming the unfairness of it all. While not all athletes act in this reprehensible way, it seems today’s headlines are less about accomplishments and charitable acts in the community and more about cheating and bad behavior in the courtroom.

Showing once again how fallible today’s celebrities and “role” models are, two somewhat prominent people were busted this week using drugs. Michael Phelps is easily one of the most recognizable people on the planet and Obama is brother to THE most recognizable person on the planet. Millions of people have either tried or currently use marijuana but do not face a fraction of the scrutiny or condemnation these two are currently going through. Unfair? Not one bit. When you enjoy the perks of the limelight you must accept the responsibilities and consequences that go along with it. In an interesting note, when asked his opinion on Phelps, President Obama denied knowing who he was.
